The
Tehachapi Hospital Foundation (THF) was created in 1983 as an
IRS 501(c)(3) organization with hospital nonprofit public benefit
purposes stated. Public support for the Tehachapi Hospital later
reached a relative low and the group became inactive as a result. Then,
when it became obvious that Tehachapi was in danger of losing its
hospital, public apathy turned to concern and in May 2001 THF
reactivated with the goal of building a new hospital. The Foundation
incorporated in 2001 as a nonprofit California Public Benefit
Corporation with the primary objectives “to promote and to advance a
new healthcare facility and needs of the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare
District”, “to build a new Medical Facility to include, but not be
limited to, a new hospital, new long term care facilities, medical
office facilities and related support facilities”, and “to engage in
fund raising activities and solicitations to carry out said objectives”. To those objectives we are
actively generating public awareness of the
deadline and seeking donations and funding sources. Time is running out
and a new facility must be available before January 2008*** because, if
the hospital were to close (thus allowing its license to operate as a
rural critical access hospital to lapse), obtaining a new license for a
hospital in Tehachapi would be extremely difficult and time consuming
due to the studies and reports required. We need your donations and
support to demonstrate to other funding sources this area’s commitment
to its hospital.
At the March 2, 2004 election, Bond Measure "J" was passed overwhelmingly with a 79.8% to 20.2% majority in favor of passage: To improve the quality of healthcare services provided locally, expand and upgrade emergency room, x-ray, diagnostic imaging and mammogram facilities and services, improve laboratory facilities, and modernize hospital acute care facilities, shall the Tehachapi Valley Health Care District be authorized to issue $15,000,000 of bonds to acquire, construct and improve healthcare facilities at interest rates below the legal limit? This proved a genuine commitment by area voters to a hospital for this area, and our Foundation played a role in getting the word out rallying support for its passage. We knew that passage of Measure "J" would not end our role of promotion and advancement because a $15,000,000 modern hospital would require millions more in equipment to provide "state of the art" facilities for diagnostics and treatment (care). At the November 3, 2009 election another $50,000,000 of General Obligation Bonds for new hospital construction were approved by the hospital district voters. Shortly thereafter a Citizens Bond Oversight Committee was established by the TVHD Board of Directors. *** An extension of the deadline has been granted. |
